Putting is often called a game within a game, because many of the skills you need to be a good putter are different from those required for the rest of the game. What's more, studies show that putting accounts for 43% of the shots among better players. You'd be hard-pressed to find a great golfer who wasn't a good putter!

Given these facts, it makes sense for time-pressed golfers to invest time in their putting. Yet in my experience, most students ask for tips on everything but putting which has always amazed me. With a good understanding of the basic fundamentals and lots of practice, in my opinion anyone can putt like a pro!

Set up

Hold the putter with whatever grip you feel comfortable

The putter blade is square to the target line with the sole flat to the ground

The ball just left of the sternum

The hands directly below the shoulders and opposite the ball

Both feet should be square to the target line

Arms slightly flexed

Legs flexed. Shoulders, arms, knees and feet parallel to the target line

The eyes are directly over the target line

Body weight spread evenly between both feet

Swing keys

Move the putter head back and through on the target line

The stroke is a one-piece movement of the shoulders arms and hands with no breaking or twisting of the wrists.

The tempo should be smooth and even with the width of the backswing mirroring the follow-through

For short shots make a shorter backswing, for longer putts make a longer backswing

Additional observations:

Visualise the distance by making several practice strokes while looking at the hole

Avoid moving your head and legs during the stroke

On long putts and slow greens a little wrist action on the backswing will help you make a smoother unforced stroke
